Marvin Pentz Gaye, Jr. - an American singer-songwriter and instrumentalist with a three-octave vocal range.

Marvin Gaye is one of the best sellers at Mbop, and he was a member of the doo-wop group `The Moonglows` in the late fifties. He ventured into a solo career after the group disbanded in 1960 signing with the Tamla subsidiary of Motown Records. It was not until 1971, when Marvin recorded his landmark album, `What's Going On`. This album changed the landscape of rhythm and blues music, by representing a full view of social ills in America including war, police brutality, racism, drug addiction, environmentalism, and urban decay.
In 2008, the American music magazine Rolling Stone ranked Gaye no6 on its list of The Greatest Singers of All Time, and ranked no18 on 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
